Department of Water Resources is Hiring an ATTORNEY III Near Sacramento, CA

Under the general direction of the Assistant General Counsel, the incumbent, exercising independent judgment with broad discretion and consistent with good customer service practices, performs duties related to the Office of the General Counsel’s (OGC) legal support of complex environmental permitting and compliance, such as State Water Project management (SWP) and operations of the SWP under regulatory restrictions, Delta Programs including project implementation related to Biological and Incidental Take (ITP) requirements at the Department of Water Resources (DWR). The incumbent provides legal advice with a high level of specialization to DWR executive management, program management, and staff about complex and sensitive cases and/or matters involving opposing counsel. The incumbent, under the general direction of the Assistant General Counsel and/or a senior attorney, may have contact with members of the legislature, gubernatorial appointees, constitutional officers, and the general public.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Able to work cooperatively with a variety of individuals and organizations.
  • Must be able to professionally communicate with DWR executive management, colleagues, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in environmental law.
  • Knowledge of and experience with civil litigation focused on endangered species.
  • Experience in Public Law and Public Records.
  • Experience with Real Estate, Contracting, and analyzing public funding restrictions.
  • Experience working in Water Law, Water Rights, and/or Delta issues.
  • Knowledge of and experience with preparing California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Administrative Records.
